Methods of Tree Removal

Trees are a wonderful feature that add privacy and create a colorful environment for every property. Despite this, there are times that they can be detrimental and need to be removed for the safety of those using the property. Dying trees are a safety hazard since they are likely to fall at any time. Trees with weak branches may also be removed or pruned to prevent such branches from falling on buildings, causing destruction of property. At other times, roots of trees may overgrow to other structures within the property, necessitating their removal. The process of tree removal should be carried out with a lot of care and with the required equipment to ensure the safety of the arborist. The following are the most common types of tree removal methods and when they are applicable.

Tree falling method

This process involves cutting at the base of the tree, letting the whole of it fall to the ground. This is usually the easiest and most cost-effective method of tree removal. It is also the safest but poses a risk of possible damage to property, especially when the tree is cut without taking surrounding structures and vegetation into consideration. This method requires ample space on which the tree will land, depending on its height. A lot of clean-up is also required on site after the tree has fallen.

Traditional tree removal method

This is a safe and widely used method of tree removal. The arborist starts by cutting down all the branches of the tree from the bottom upwards. Upon reaching the top of the tree, he cuts down sections of the tree coming downwards and lets them fall to the ground below. He continuously does this until the remaining section of the tree can be safely cut at the base without causing damage to property. This method is suitable for taller trees, which are likely to damage property if removed using the tree falling method.

Spar pole rigging method

In this method, the tree branches are removed just like in the traditional method. However, after all branches have been cut, the top and subsequent pieces of wood cut from the tree are lowered down using a rigging rope as opposed to the traditional method where they are left to freely fall to the ground. The weight and size of wood is considered before every piece is lowered down.

Whole tree rigging method

In this method, every part of the tree is attached to the rigging rope and lowered to the ground. This means both the branches and all other pieces cut from the tree are lowered to the ground. This method is a zero impact removal method and it ensures no destruction to property since pieces of wood or branches are not left to fall freely to the ground.

The method to be chosen for tree removal depends on the surroundings, space, safety measures and size of the tree. For minimum destruction to surrounding vegetation or property, both spar pole and whole tree rigging methods can be used.
